Camp Greentop Fosters a Community of Care.
For the Shuler Family, Camp Greentop is Family.
As a widowed mother of adult twin sons with significant disabilities, Sharon Shuler relies heavily on her community to ensure that Matt and Adam live happy, healthy, meaningful lives. For the past two decades, The League’s Camping & Recreation team has supported their family in providing them with the joy, quality care, and opportunities for growth that they deserve.
One of the best things about Camp Greentop is that the staff make it their job to relate to, and communicate with, “the boys.” Though they are identical twins, Sharon’s sons have very distinct personalities. Adam is a really good hugger. His method of connection comes from gently touching your hand to his face. Matthew is more forward and very good at getting your attention when he wants it! One week during the summer and one week during the winter, Sharon can sleep a little more soundly knowing that Matt and Adam are safe, understood, and having the time of their lives with some of their favorite people from all over the world.
“When you have kids with special needs, you’ve got to have people who care.”
Sharon is so grateful to The League for providing her boys with community and fun in the fresh air of the Catoctin Mountains and Camp Letts, where she knows that they remain engaged and cared for. At least twice a year, Matt and Adam are able to exercise some independence apart from her. And, she is able to relax from her full-time mom duties! The Shuler’s cannot imagine their summers and winters without the amazing Camping & Recreation staff!
