Celebrating Samera: 13 Years of Love & Light

Since 2013, Samera has been a vibrant and beloved member of The League for People with Disabilities community. For more than a decade, she has brought determination, warmth, and unmistakable joy to everyone around her.

Samera first came to The League as a young woman eager to build connections, develop her independence, and explore new opportunities. As a participant in the Adult Medical Day Program, Samera has strong bonds with several of her peers and League staff members. Living with cerebral palsy has never defined her—it’s simply one part of her story. What truly defines Samera is her resilience, her sense of humor, and her unwavering commitment to living life on her own terms.

Over the years, Samera has participated in a wide range of League programs and activities. Whether engaging in creative arts, building job skills, or enjoying recreational outings with friends, she approaches each opportunity with enthusiasm. During the summer, Samera spends one week in rustic bliss with her favorite campers and counselors at Camp Greentop. To keep things fun, she peppers in some travel trips and weekend respites with The League’s Camping & Recreation team throughout the year (as long as they don’t interfere with the second Saturday of the month so that she can spend her evening dancing at CLUB1111!).

Samera is an accomplished author with a published book of poetry (which can be purchased on Amazon here). But she doesn’t allow the fame to go to her head – she is a woman of faith, humility, and positivity. Regardless of what she may be going through on a personal level, she shows up at The League with a listening ear, offering compassion and levity by showing appreciation for her favorite kind of man: tall, dark, handsome, and famous!

The wheelchair doesn’t make me less of a person. I have a lot of things going for me. I have a book. I write. There are plenty of things I can do that others can’t. 

But perhaps what stands out most about Samera is her role as a friend and leader within the community. She is quick to offer encouragement, celebrate others’ successes, and lend a listening ear. New participants often find a welcoming smile in Samera—someone who understands the importance of belonging and inclusion because she has helped build that sense of belonging herself.

As a Black woman with cerebral palsy who has recently overcome a life-changing procedure, Samera represents the strength that comes from embracing every part of one’s identity. She reminds us that diversity within the disability community matters, and that representation, visibility, and opportunity are essential. Her presence enriches The League in countless ways.

Reflecting on her 13 years with The League, it’s clear that Samera’s journey has been one of growth, empowerment, and connection. She has not only benefited from the programs and support offered here—she has shaped the spirit of this community through her kindness, perseverance, and authenticity.

The League and its staff help me feel strong and confident. I can be an example and offer support to the other participants.

We are proud to celebrate Samera and are grateful for the light she continues to shine at The League for People with Disabilities. Here’s to the many milestones she has achieved and to the bright future of her 36th year on this Earth ahead.
