Personal Supports: A Sidekick and Hero, All in One

For Kayia and her Personal Support counselor Taylor, every day has the potential for learning, growth, and fun. Kayia is early to rise and eager to fill her schedule with meaningful experiences that bring her closer to her goal: employment. Taylor has been a direct support professional with The League for six years, and brings a calm, motivational positivity that is sure to help Kayia succeed on her path to a long and rewarding career.

Kayia and Taylor both enjoy being active, and community integration is an important component of their time spent together. Whether they are bowling, shopping, watching scary movies in the theater, swimming in the heated pool at The League’s Wellness Center, visiting the library, or dropping in on a line-dancing class, the ladies are taking advantage of real-world experiences that will boost Kayia’s confidence, improve her social skills, and help her regulate her emotions in healthy ways.

Taylor wants to build trust with Kayia and empower her to reach her personal and professional goals through everyday opportunities and exchanges. While out shopping together, Kayia is able to practice her money management skills. With the application of her very first library card, Kayia is able to improve her literacy. At the community line-dancing classes, Kayia is able to learn international choreography and make new friends. Each interaction increases Kayia’s independence and self-sufficiency, preparing her to fully participate in society.

“I will always be her positive sidekick, and encourage her to advocate for herself.” – Taylor, Direct Support Professional

Because Kayia is empathetic, caring, and people-oriented, she wants to work in a role that allows plenty of social interaction. Through the support of her mother, her sister, and Taylor, Kayia has a strong foundation of women to guide her as she navigates entering the workforce. Taylor is grateful that she can serve as a source of assurance, peace, and adventure, encouraging Kayia to continue trying new things and speaking up for herself in public situations. Kayia and Taylor are looking forward to getting manicures at CLUB1111 this Saturday night, and spending the evening dancing with friends. Regardless of where they go, Kayia and Taylor choose happiness, which feels pretty heroic.
